Acoustic Reflection: Review and Clinical Applications for sleep-Disordered Breathing

January 1, 2002PHARYNGOMETER Studies, Related to Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Sleep and Breathing, 2002

Authors: J. S. Viviano, D.D.S.

Conclusion: “The potential clinical usefulness of AR in the treatment of
patients with SDB involves all stages of treatment: initial screening of patients, establishing patient candidacy, evaluating nasal
patency, determining mandibular posture that optimizes airway patency, determining orthotic titration settings, and verifying continued efficacy of orthotic settings at follow-up. The use of AR could facilitate front-line efforts in isolating afflicted individuals; ensure a higher level of success for surgical, positional, and airway orthotic therapies; eliminate the possibility that an undiagnosed nasal obstruction could interfere with successful treatment; establish orthotic construction parameters; and objectively verify the orthotics’ continued effectiveness. “
